See if you can locate a copy of the book “Awakening the Spine” by Vanda Scaravelli. It’s a marvelous interpretation of yoga and a reference book that will support you for many years to come on your yoga journey.
She reminds us: “To relax is not to collapse, but simply to undo tensions. When tensions leave the body, it returns to its original state, and balance is re-established.” Have you discovered that your best work or solutions to life’s challenges comes when you are in a more relaxed state? And when we’re relaxed, we know are breathing fully into our bodies. The next time you encounter stress or tension, whether that be solving a problem at work or searching for that comfortable place in a more challenging yoga pose, notice that the breath is the key. And we always carry that key with us!
Sometimes we come to believe that yoga consists of the ability to do postures well and that its primary concern is our physical body. But here’s a great way of looking at our practice from yoga instructor Mark Stephens:
“In doing yoga, we are gradually awakening to a clearer and truer understanding of who we are in our deepest, innermost being.” The first of every month is a great time to re-commit to practice...especially during the more active months in Minnesota! Not only does our body benefit from the balance that comes from yoga practice--as we heighten and refine our inner experience, our outer world reflects this beauty that lives within us!
